In March 2011 a Hays County jury convicted Swami Prakashanand Saraswati on twenty counts of indecency with a child. The court sentenced him to 280 years. He was not there to hear it. The sentence was handed down in absentia, to a defendant who had already run.
He remains a fugitive. Interpol lists him under a red notice. The notice is filed under a misspelling of his name.
A 2012 US Marshals affidavit laid out the mechanics. A follower was handed five thousand dollars for a false passport and told to price charter jets. A woman drove the guru toward the Mexican border. His aide fled with him and signaled her arrival by activating an Indian insurance policy. The lead marshal called it “the most sophisticated scheme I’ve seen.”

The arrangements trace to a single meeting. The March 2011 meeting where the escape was arranged was held at Marsha Kent’s Texas home. Afterward she emailed a participant, offering to “support, assist, or help... especially on this side.”
While the guru was on the run, the sect’s financial officer moved his Indian bank statements to Peter Spiegel. The affidavit does not say Spiegel financed the escape. It says his money papers went to him.
Peter Spiegel was the man on the hook. The Hays County forfeiture file, dockets 11-0484 and 11-0485, names him as Surety and Indemnitor. To qualify, he swore in 2008 that he was “worth, in my own right, at least ten million dollars.”
When the defendant vanished, the State moved to forfeit. Spiegel intervened to fight it. Then, two days before the State won summary judgment, he nonsuited. At the punishment phase he testified that he “didn’t know he’d be financially responsible.” He had signed as Surety and Indemnitor and sworn to ten million dollars.
The court’s own paper records where the fugitive lived, on paper. It served him “c/o Peter Spiegel” and “c/o Marsha Kent.” The two names at the center of the escape were the two addresses the court had for the man who escaped.
Twenty counts carried a conviction. A jury reached a verdict. A marshal filed an affidavit describing a passport, a border drive, and an insurance policy flipped on as a signal. A bond file names a surety worth ten million dollars who walked back what that signature meant. And no one has been charged for the escape. The guru is still gone, still under a red notice, still filed under the wrong spelling of his name.
In fairness. The Marshals affidavit does not say Peter Spiegel financed the escape. It says the guru’s bank statements were moved to him during the flight, and that he was the named surety on the forfeited bond. No one has been charged in connection with the escape.
